Gethsemane

I kept my vigil by your bed

Your breathing soft, discernible by night I held your hand.

I kept my silent vigil, sheltering you from the night.

Many nights you sat with me.

Wiped my brow, eased my pain.

You kept me from the night.

I have done all I can.

You are my child, my husband, my sister.

Your breath is fainter now.

The night darker, tears burn my eyes and fall

Upon white sheets, stark.

My strength ebbs with my will. I have done my best.

The light is fading with your life, My friend, my God, my self.

I am tired of the pain, your pain, mine. I can do nothing.

Transfixed upon the cross, behold the man.

My eyes close. You are gone.

My vigil failed with my grief.

Yet we are not alone.

A man with golden wings and flaming sword

Stands vigil at your bed.

His eyes flash fire. His tears are diamonds.

The night flees before the Light.

And we are not alone.

Behold, He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.

And we are not alone.
