NANCY HOLDEN
I've been a member of the Dakotas Conference
for 14 years.
Born in Kentucky, I lived many other places before coming to this area,
but now it's home to me. Winter is beautiful--you learn the coping
skills of cold-weather places. At first I served in three-point
charges -- preach/drive/preach - drive/preach/drive -- you get a lot of
practice at both! In little towns a pastor receives tremendous respect
and appreciation. Now I'm serving in the "big city" of Fargo, where
there's clean air and little crime. The leadership of this conference
has been supportive of me in every way from day one, and I wouldn't leave for
anything. The Dakotas is a wonderful place in which to serve God.

My move to the Dakotas Conference came as the result of
going to Dakota Wesleyan University.
I served a church while attending college and got
acquainted with members of the conference. The atmosphere was so
different from the conference to which I related at the time. It seemed
so informal and they were very personable. Annual Conference was and
still is a family reunion. Once in a while we even do some work. I
have had the privilege of being involved in many of conference level
ministries like Youth Coordinator, Camping Committee, Board of Ministry,
Council on Ministries, as well as serving my six-year stint as District
Superintendent. It has been a very postive experience to come together
over the miles not simply to meet, but to connect. Serving in the
Dakotas is a real challenge for anyone, but the people and the weather
make it worthwhile. God has blessed our ministry in the Dakotas and
will continue as we seek a new vision and quality leadership for the
conference.

Another way of getting a sense of who we are is to
read what we read. Every day, thousands of United
Methodists in the Dakotas make the devotions of
The Upper Room magazine a
daily part of their lives.
