Increasing our biblical knowledge by traveling combines education and sightseeing. Some of you have traveled to the Holy Land with Educational Opportunities, a Christian tour ministry begun years ago by the United Methodist Church.

Pastor Wes and Bonnie Falk will be taking the Life and Teachings of Paul special cruise, eleven days in Greece and Turkey. We will depart February 27, 2002. If interested, brochures are available in the church office.

    NEWS FROM MISSIONS

    Letters from Missionaries

Maybe you remember a few summers back when we were privileged to have Ruth Grubel speak at our church. Ruth and her husband, Mike, are United Methodist missionaries who teach at a University in Japan. We recently received a letter from Ruth updating us on their recent activities. Soon after the September 11 disaster, Ruth took a group of the university students to England for a joint seminar with students at a college in Oxford. They were able to attend a special service there to remember the victims of the attack. In August, Mike and Ruth took another group of students to South Korea for the Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work Week. Ruth was recently asked to speak on issues facing churches in the U.S. It is encouraging to realize that people in Japan are concerned about us.

We just received a newsletter from our missionaries, the Websters. They state that much continues to be done in the mission agricultural stations of Musokatanda, D.R. Congo and in Mujila Falls during their visitation in the United States. Those of us who attended their visit to our church heard how the children are sent to gather caterpillars for one source of protein while fields of tall grasses are burned in order to catch the rats living there as another source of protein. The Websters hope to teach the natives to raise cattle on the bountiful grass instead and provide both milk and meat. They are also encouraging the raising of crops of peanuts and black beans. The Websters plan to return to Africa in December or January. They hope to send ahead a 20 ft. storage container containing a sawmill, forage chopper and cane presses. Our coin collection from October will help them pay for

A Report from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
The UMCOR hotline reports that on July 5, 12 days after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Peru, one of medium intensity struck the same region. Measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the temblor rattled already frayed nerves and toppled hundreds of previously damaged buildings. UMCOR has sent an emergency grant to the Methodist church of Peru, which is preparing food parcels of rice, sugar, noodles, oil, salt, and dried vegetables. The Methodist youth are helping to pack and transport the bags to delivery points coordinated by the Red cross. Another crucial need is funds to help with water system repair. To join in this response, please give to UMCOR’s International Disaster Response, Advance #982450-1.

Last month, tropical storm Allison caused severe flood damage which will require long term recovery work in the areas of Houston, Texas, Louisiana and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. IN the near future, volunteers will be needed to help with repairs and rebuilding. For more information, please call the volunteer line at 800-918-3100.

In Siren, Wisconsin, UMCOR personnel are assessing the destruction caused by the June 18 tornado. Considerable financial resources will be needed to assist people as they recover. Please give to UMCOR’s Domestic Disaster Response #901670-1.

Our ecumenical partners in Eritrea inform us that, although fighting has stopped in that country, famine is still a real and present danger. More than 300,000 persons, mostly women and children, remain in makeshift camps and host communities. Those who have returned to their homes have found massive destruction. All are in need of the basics: food, medicine, temporary shelter, bedding and utensils. A generous response to Advance #101250-4, “Africa Famine Relief”, will enable UMCOR to assist in this disaster.

Gifts may be made through Emmanuel or by calling 800-554-8583.

    Chancel Choir Needs Singers!

If you like to sing and have fun, the Chancel Choir is the group for you. We sing a variety of musical styles, from classical such as the Hallelujah Chorus to the most modern arrangements. We sing music primarily in four parts (SATB) and provide ample time for members to learn the music. We need all voice parts as the more members we have, the richer the sound becomes as each person’s voice is added to the choir. Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. is when we rehearse.

We alternate services, singing at the 8:30 service one week and 10:00 the next.

Some of the events we participate in are the fall choir dinner show, special services such as Ash Wednesday, a concert on Palm Sunday at the Village at Manor Park and in the spring, we will be preparing a cantata. You are encouraged to consider giving of your time and talent by joining the Chancel Choir. Any questions, contact Bill Follmann at the Church Office.

Any student entering grades 6-12 is invited to join Rainbow Ringers, our youth handbell choir.

We rehearse every Sunday at 5 p.m. and will usually play for church two Sundays in a row every six to eight weeks. The same piece will be played at the 8:30 service one week and the 10:00 service the other week.

No music experience is needed but is helpful. Any questions, contact Kathy Kamps at the Church Office.

    Emmanuel's Community Garden

    Eagle Project Update

Emmanuel’s Community Garden is the name selected for the now completed garden at church. I hope you have enjoyed watching it take shape and the vegetables grow and grow.

Thank you to all who so generously donated materials, monies and labor to the project. A special thank you goes to the Foundation for their generous grant. Without it, the garden would not have become a reality. A final thank you goes to the Goodwill Adult Center staff and their clients who faithfully water the garden everyday.

There is still time to join the Garden Club to help maintain and harvest the garden as needed. If you are interested, please contact me at the church office:ecommchurch@wi.rr.com.

So, feel free to take a closer look at the garden, sit on the bench and even pull out a weed or two if you like.
