People
often ask me, "What do United Methodists believe?"
First,
Methodists believe in the need for each of us to have a personal relationship
with God through Jesus Christ. This relationship begins when we place our trust
in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. John Wesley, the founder of the
Methodist Movement, spoke of the experience in his life as "feeling his heart
strangely warmed." Some call it "conversion", some call it "being born again",
and some refer to it as "asking Jesus into my heart." Whatever words we may use,
Methodists believe each of us needs to decide for ourselves to have a
relationship with God.
Second, but just as important, Methodists believe as John Wesley said, "In going onto perfection." Simply put, just as each of us needs to initially meet God through Jesus Christ, so we also need to walk with Him each day of our lives, literally becoming like Him each passing day (i.e., "going onto perfection" because He is the perfect one). This life of service and devotion gives both purpose and meaning to all who choose to follow.
