United Methodist Men

"Be ye doers of the Word and not hearer's only"

Purpose

The purpose of the United Methodist men's unit shall be to provide a group and a plan that will lead to deepening the spiritual lives of those participating, to strengthen and enhance the role of men in the church, to challenge, to stimulate, inspire and motivate men of the church; and to under gird all phases of ministry and programs of the church.

Salem UMC's Methodist Men have served well for many years. They have sponsored Scouting, Methodist Youth endeavors, mission programs overseas, and mission programs in the United States. They have helped care for the church by providing equipment and sometimes labor to keep the church and its grounds in good condition. They have assisted in painting and performed numerous small maintenance tasks. They have assisted the United Methodist Women during the annual bazaar, the clothes closet, and in distributing food baskets to the needy.

Salem United Methodist Men's goal for 2008 is to work on Fatherhood issues. What is a Father? Where does he derive his authority from. How did Fatherhood get in the state it is today? How do we as men relate to our children in a positive way? How do we handle all these issues in today's society?

When you look down at your newborn child you may be proud at first, then you become overcome by the responsibility as it sinks in that you are now responsible for that tiny person for the next two decades. Nobody hands you a book that gives you the answers to all our questions. There was no "Dad School" you could attend, no night classes at the local college.

We feel that Fatherhood is very important, and the proof of this can be seen by examining our children today. Those children lucky enough to have two concerned parents have a much higher success rate at becoming good adults.
